Chapter 26

Plants and Trees

22.a. One is permitted to smell flowers, even while they are still connected to the ground.

22.b. One may even move them to and fro, as long as

1) they have flexible stalks which do not become stiff if left to grow and

2) one is careful not to detach anything from the ground.

22.c. On the other hand, one is not allowed to smell fruit while it is still on the tree, for fear that one may pick it to eat.

a.Fruits, leaves and branches are muktzeh

b. if

1) they fell off the tree on Shabbath or Yom Tov or

2) there is a doubt as to whether they fell off the tree on Shabbath or Yom Tov or before, or

c. if

1) they were picked off the tree by a non-Jew on Shabbath or Yom Tov, even for his own use, or

2) there is a doubt as to whether a non-Jew picked them that day or previously.
