Chapter 18

Specific Laws Relating to the Transfer of Objects from One Place to Another on Shabbath, Where There Is No Eiruv*

Specific laws relating to the transfer of objects from one place to another on Yom Tov are dealt with in Chapter 19.

 

ARTICLES WHICH ARE WORN

2.a. The Torah prohibition includes

1) going out into reshuth ha-rabbim with something in of one’s pocket,

2) going out with a candy (sweet), chewing gum or any other food in one’s mouth,

3) a tailor’s going out with a needle stuck in his lapel

4) going out with a bundle balanced on one’s head, in countries where this is the custom, or on one’s shoulder,

5) going out with a thread or rubber band around one’s wrist, since many people habitually slip them around the wrist for convenience and then walk about with them still on, and

6) a woman’s going into reshuth ha-rabbim with a hand- kerchief stuck under her gold wristwatch or bracelet, where this is the practice.

2.b. A person who goes into reshuth ha-rabbim

1) with something other than food in his mouth or

2) carrying on his head something which it is not usual to carry in this way

transgresses a Rabbinical, but not a Torah, prohibition.

2.c. Whether or not one may wear false teeth in reshuth ha-rabbim is dealt with in paragraph 15 below.

2.d. One may go out into reshuth ha-rabbim wearing a dental plate or brace. (See Chapter 34, paragraph 29.)
