Chapter 22

General Principles Relating to Muktzeh on Shabbath and Yom Tov

 

OBJECTS WHICH, FOR EXTRANEOUS REASONS MAY NOT BE MOVED

15. It follows from paragraph 14a above that a door which one is not allowed to open because there is a burning candle close to it (in the circumstances detailed in Chapter 13, paragraph 33) may be opened-after the candle has gone out-only

a. in case of pressing need, for instance if one has to do so in order to enter one’s apartment, or

b. in the event that when the candle was still burning there existed a possibility, however remote or inconvenient, of opening the door in such a way that the candle would not be extinguished.
