There are some people who refrain from lending out their utensils because of some enmity they feel towards the fellow who wishes to borrow it. This is much worse than the average person who does not want to lend out their belongings, for by not lending the item due to enmity, the person is also transgressing “Do not take revenge” and “Do not bear a grudge.” Let the person contemplate about all the times he displeased the Holy One, so to speak, through his speech and actions, and despite that the Holy One does not take revenge from him. On the contrary, He does kindness with the person in all the person’s affairs. One should learn from this how to behave with one’s fellows. Perhaps this is the meaning of the verse, you shall not take revenge and you shall not bear a grudge against the members of your people; you shall love your fellow as yourself – I am Hashem (Vayikra 19:18) – Scripture concludes the verse with the words “I am Hashem” to teach us that just as Hashem does not take revenge against us, so we should act towards our fellows.
