Chapter 23

Housekeeping and Use of Domestic Facilities on Shabbath and Yom Tov.

CLEANING

1.a. 1) a) With the exception mentioned in paragraph 2b below, one may use a soft broom to sweep a room covered with tile, wood, linoleum or similar which flooring.

b) Regarding a carpeted floor see paragraph 4 below.

2) One may not use a hard broom made of twigs or reeds, and such a broom is muktzeh.

3) Preferably, one should sweep only in a place which was already swept before the beginning of Shabbath or Yom Tov.

1.b. 1) It is forbidden to reattach a broomstick which has separated from its brush.

2) It is prohibited to fasten it to the brush even with the aid of a screw which is designed for that purpose.

3) Even if the stick is still attached to the brush, one may not strengthen the connection with the assistance of a nail.
