Laws Relating to the Erection of Protective Shelters and of Partitions on Shabbath and Yom Tov
COVERING WITHOUT INTENDING TO PROVIDE SHELTER
23.a. 1) One may both open and close
a) a folding chair,
b) a folding bed,
c) a folding table and
d) a folding playpen.
2) This is because each of these items is opened and closed as a matter of course and its moving components are integral, connected parts of the one unit.
23.b. 1) One may not attach a sunshade to a deck chair
2) One may open and close a sunshade which has been attached to a deck chair since before Shabbath or Yom Tov. (See paragraph 13 above.)
23.c. One may not spread a net over a folding playpen, unless
1) it has been tied to the side of the playpen since before Shabbath or Yom Tov and
2) it has attached cords for drawing it across (as in paragraph 14 above).
23.d. One may extend and decrease the size of a table by
1) raising or lowering flaps or
2) inserting or extracting an additional leaf, even if in so doing, one inserts pins protruding from the leaf into corresponding holes in the table, or withdraws them.
23.e. By contrast, it is forbidden, on Shabbath or Yom Tov, either to assemble or dismantle
1) a child’s crib (cot) made up of separate sections or
2) a camp-bed which is held together or kept taut by means of pegs or pins which have to be driven into position.
