Laws Derived from Isaiah: Speaking (727)

Chapter 29

Laws Derived from Isaiah: Running, Walking, Commerce, Measuring, Reading, Speaking

SPEAKING ON SHARBATH AND YOM TOV WITH THE OBJECT OF CONDUCTING EVERYDAY AFFAIRS

51.a. One must not on Shabbath tell another person, even a non-Jew, to do something for one after Shabbath if

1) it is forbidden to do that thing on Shabbath itself and

2) there is no possibility of doing it in a permitted manner on Shabbath.

51.b. Making such a request would amount to pursuing one’s business on Shabbath by means of one’s words, contrary to the prohibition based on the verses in Isaiah referred to in paragraph 2 above.

51.c. As mentioned there, and as will become clearer in the ensuing paragraphs, pursuing one’s own business is forbidden, but pursuing the business of Heaven in permitted.
