Chazal said that a possible sin is worse than a definite sin, as at a time when a person knows that he has sinned, he will pay attention and repent, whereas when he is unsure is has committed a sin he will say to himself that he probably did not commit the sin. It is correct for a person to flee from sins, and to worry even about the slight possibility of a sin more than when he flees from a sword. Our eyes see that an ill person worries about and keeps himself away from anything which might possibly cause his illness to become worse even if it is only a remote possibility. If that is the way behave regarding temporary life, how much more so must we worry about eternal life and make sure not to antagonize our Creator. One who does not bother to distance himself from the possibility of a sin, is not worrying about the honor of his Creator.
