315. Charms

There are many things which help to atone for the sins and iniquities of a person as charms, and the living person should pay attention to be swift in them, for his sins can be atoned for without suffering, fasts and monetary loss, so long as he performs these things with love and fear. If he does not keep these things what will he answer on the day of judgment? He will be doubly punished on the day of punishment, for all of these things are the words of Chazal, who themselves are true and their words are true, and if he does not believe and does not fulfil he has committed a crime with his soul, for he is not interested in saving himself and atoning for his sins. It follows that a person should strengthen himself to perform these acts which form part of the way of repentance and especially in those easy things which are a charm for atonement. We will proceed to list some of these things in short form:

1) Anyone who answers “Amen yehei shemei rabbah” with all of his strength (which means with all of his concentration and with moving his internal organs) even if he has a touch of heresy he is forgiven.

2) Anyone who keeps the laws of Shabbos as they are supposed to be kept, even if he has served idols like the generation of Enosh, his sins will be forgiven.

3) Anyone who controls his character traits Hashem will forgive all of his sins.

4) Anyone who hears Aggadah (Midrash) from a public speaker and answers “Amen yehei shemeih rabbah” afterwards will have all of his sins forgiven.

5) Anyone who recites the song of the sea (Az yashir) with rejoicing, and imagines to himself that he himself is being saved and that Par’oh and his army are being drowned, and therefore he says the song, will have his sins atoned for.

6) Anyone who cries and mourns for a person who is pious, has all of his sins forgiven.

7) Anyone who prays on Friday night and says “Vayechulu”, two serving angels say to him “And your sin will go away and your iniquity will be atoned for!”

8) Suffering scour the sins of a person, and if he accepts the suffering with love, he will have many descendants, will have a long life, and Hashem will want that he will be successful in his undertakings.

9) One who occupies himself with the laws of offerings, has the merit as if he actually offered them up and they forgive all of his sins.

10) Anyone who occupies himself with Torah for its own sake has his sins forgiven, and his merits and rewards are many, as is written explicitly in the chapters of the fathers.

11) Anyone who wraps himself in Tzitzis and puts on Tefilin and reads the Shema and prays has all of his sins forgiven.

12) Anyone who feels pain and cries on Yom Kippur when they read the beginning of the reading of “Acharei mos” which discusses the death of the righteous people (Nadav and Avihu), Hashem announces about him that “And your sin will go away!”.

13) Anyone to whom a miracle occurs and says a song of thanks it is known that all of his sins have been forgiven.

14) How good it is to learn the book of Psalms with a voice of singing and thankfulness, and he must gird his loins and arouse his love for Hashem with pure thoughts, to fulfil these words what is correct to do. This applies only if the wicked man abandons his way and does not return to foolishness, and he should not do these things for his own honor in order that his sins should be forgiven. Instead, he should perform these things for the sake of heaven and the honor will come by itself. His heart should understand from these charms that these things are ancient and true and create great pleasure before our Father in heaven to the extent that He gives great reward for them, and all of his aim should be to create pleasure for his Creator and this is all of the fruit of the reward for the commandments that he should know and make known and be known the extent of the pleasure that he causes. Fortunate is the one born from woman who merits to this. We have no greater reward than this for this is all of the man.

“My brothers and my nation, take this sefer Torah, and with this, and like this learn well, so that you should have it good; listen and enliven your soul, and achieve gladness and joy in this world and the world to come” (From the author’s intro.)
