Chapter 18
Specific Laws Relating to the Transfer of Objects from One Place to Another on Shabbath, Where There Is No Eiruv
Specific laws relating to the transfer of objects from one place to another on Yom Tov are dealt with in Chapter 19.
ARTICLES WHICH ARE WORN
27.a. 1) It is a common practice to go out into reshuth ha-rabbim wearing a gold wristwatch, as long as one would not take it off if it stopped. (See, however, paragraph 12 above.)
2) In this case, the watch is considered to be an ornament proper.
3) It is irrelevant whether or not the bracelet of the watch is also made of gold.
27.b. 1) One should not go out into reshuth ha-rabbim wearing an ordinary wristwatch, even if it has a gold bracelet, because one would normally take it off if it stopped.
2) Nonetheless, one should not object to a person’s adopting a more lenient approach and going out into reshuth ha-rabbim wearing an ordinary watch, with an ordinary strap or bracelet, since there are some authorities who permit this.
27.c. 1) By way of contrast, there are no valid grounds for allowing a person to go out into reshuth ha-rabbim wearing a pocket-watch on a chain.
2) Since the watch is carried inside the pocket, one cannot be said to be wearing an ornament.
3) This is so even where both the watch and the chain are made of gold.
28.a. One is allowed to go out into reshuth ha-rabbim with ribbons, buttons or fringes attached to one’s clothes, even if the only purpose served by them is decorative.
28.b. From paragraph 30 below it will be seen that the case of spare buttons is different.
28.c. See paragraph 38 below with regard to tzitzith.
