Chapter 24
Laws Relating to the Erection of Protective Shelters and of Partitions on Shabbath and Yom Tov
TEMPORARY PROTECTIVE SHELTERS
12.a. In defined circumstances and for certain purposes, the Halacha regards a gap of less than three tefachim as being nonexistent, that is to say, as being filled by solid matter.
12.b. As a result of the application of this rule, a protective shelter is considered to have been in place since before Shabbath or Yom Tov in the following two cases:
1) where two cords were strung out, side by side, with a distance of at least one tefach, but less than three tefachim, between them;
2) where one cord was strung out parallel to a wall or other partition, at a distance from it of at least one tefach, but less than three tefachim.
12.c. One may put a temporary covering over the notional shelter formed by these cords or by the single cord in conjunction with the partition.
12.d. 1) One may add a temporary extension to a notional shelter, just as one may add to any other already existing protective shelter. (See paragraph 6a above.)
2) a) The extension should be commenced adjacent to the existing (notional) shelter and spread outwards from it.
b) That is to say, one should not commence at a distance from the existing (notional) shelter and spread the extension to meet it. (Compare paragraph 6c above.)
