Chapter 23
Housekeeping and Use of Domestic Facilities on Shabbath and Yom Tov.
REPAIRS
34. One must not spread putty around the edges of a pane of glass in order to fix it into the window or to make it fit more firmly
35.a. Fragments of a broken windowpane may be removed from the floor, to prevent someone being injured them, but one should take them away with the assistance of a broom or some similar object, and not move them with one’s hands, as they are muktzeh. (See Chapter 22, paragraph 35.)
35.b. 1) Pieces of broken glass which remain in the window frame should not be taken out on Shabbath or Yom Tov, since this would be an infringement of the prohibitions that fall under the general heading of “Building.”
2) Where there is a danger that someone might cut himself,
a) one may ask a non-Jew to remove the glass remaining in the frame, or
b) if there is no non-Jew available, one may remove it oneself, using a method which one would not normally employ, for example by kicking it out.
